Reynolds E. Hawkins Jr.

Class of 1978 & Coach

Reynolds E. Hawkins Jr., the second of two children born to Reynolds E. Hawkins Sr. and Mildred Johnson Hawkins, the husband to Andrea D. Hawkins of 31 years, and the proud father to Reynolds E. Hawkins IH, Jasmine D. Hawkins and Alexandrea D. Hawkins.

Reynolds attended and graduated Amityville School district in 1978, he participated in Basketball from 7* - 11* grade, Cross Country from 7"- 12* grade and Track and Field from 7*- 12* grade. Even though he loved Baseball and Basketball it was his mother who said to him, “No more Baseball and Track, you have to pick one”. Loving the recognition, but not the attention, he chose running. So under the teaching of John Gonser - Junior High (his very first coach), and Jerry Pollock- High School, he was taught the meaning of winning and working to accomplish a purpose.

Reynolds started running Cross Country in 7th grade when Junior High School athletes were 7th-9th grade students. He went undefeated in both Cross County and Track, when Coach Gonser and Coach Pollock asked him and Donald Beasley if they would be interested in moving up to Varsity (Donald was also an outstanding athlete).

While in Junior High, Reynolds ran 2 minutes and 14 seconds in the half mile in 7* grade and 4 minutes and 48 seconds in the mile in 8th grade, which are still Amityville's Junior High school records, and at that time the fastest 7th grade half mile run and 8th grade mile runs in Suffolk County. During his High School Track tenure from 9th -12th grade, he lost a total of 5 duel races over a 4 year span and never finished worse than 2nd place. In Cross Country, he lost only one duel race.

During this period, Reynolds held Cross County course records at Hecksher State Park - 15 minutes and 15 seconds and Amityville's course record of 15 minutes and 38 seconds for 3 miles. At that time running the top 50th fastest 3 miles at Sunken Meadow of 15 minutes and 49 seconds, he was also a 4 time Suffolk County New York State Cross Country meet representative, and is still Amityville's only State representative. During his freshman year in Track, Reynolds set the New York State freshman two mile record that stood for 27 years, and established the Long Island freshman mile record.

While competing during his freshman year as the #1 freshman miler/ two miler in the Nation and currently Amityville’s mile and two mile school record holder and a member of the schools mile medley relay record, he was awarded, 2 time Prep Track and Field Athlete of the Year by the National Prep- Track and Field Association.

During his freshman year, it was brought to his attention that he set the 14 year old National High School mile record but the USA Track and Field Association conducted a research and discovered that by the time the race was run(on his birthday), Reynolds was born at l:38pmandheranapprox: 4:00 pm, so legally he turned 15 years old.

After HS graduation, Reynolds attended Johnson C Smith University- Charlotte, NC (l year) earning All- CIAA(Centra1Intercol1egiateAthleticAssociation) and Freshman of the Year in Cross Country. He then transferred to F1oridaA&MUniversity where he competed and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice/Sociology. He continued running, eaming ALL-MEAC (Mid Eastem Athletic Conference) two of the three years, and an invitation to the Olympic trials 1980. Due to the political unrest between the United States and Russia, the United States did not participate in the Summer Olympic games held in Moscow.

He began his coaching at Long Island Lutheran as an assistant boys Spring track and field coach in 1987. After 1 season at LI Lutheran he created his own youth track and field club (Suburban Winds) sponsored by Huntington Youth Development Association (YDA) 1988-89. In the summer of 1988, Reynolds was chosen by Partners of America(POA) to travel to St. Vincent, West Indies to prepare and coach their Track and Field team selected to participate in the 1988 Summer Olympics- Seoul, Korea. There he worked on the philosophy and technique with their jumpers, throwers and runners. In winter 2010, Reynolds was granted the opportunity to travel back to St. Vincent, this time as the Director of Youth and Sports.

In 1989 he began coaching Cross County, Winter Track and Spring Track at Bay Shore High School, until 1996. In 1995, Kerry Doran(then Amityville’s athletic director) contacted him and asked if he was ready to come back home to Amityville. During his coaching tenure in Amityville beginning in 1996, he has been blessed with the finest athletes in New York State, coaching 16 State Champions, over 30 State medal winners, Long Island, and County record holders as well as nationally ranked individual and relay teams, while compiling a personal Spring Track record of 120-9-1,with 11 League titles, 10 County titles and 3 Winter track County titles in 18 years of coaching. He's earned 24 League/County coach of the year awards, 2013 Suffolk County Winter Track Coach of the Year, and 2009 Long Island Spring Track Coach of the Year- Presented by Newsday.

I am so overwhelmingly, proud of this moment. To be honored by your peers is the greatest individual recognition I believe one can receive.

Thank you Amityville for allowing me to become who I have become.
